Goody Two-Shoes is a variation of the Cinderella story, it was published in London around 1765 by an anonymous author. The fable tells of Goody Two-Shoes, the nickname of a poor orphan girl named Margery Meanwell, who goes through life with only one shoe. When she is given a complete pair by a rich gentleman, she is so happy that she tells everyone that she has "two shoes". Later, Margery becomes a teacher and marries a rich widower. This earning of wealth serves as proof that her virtuousness has been rewarded, a popular theme in children's literature of the era.
I remember the realization of being given my "first pair of shoes"....growing up I was a major tom-boy and really cared nothing for fashion or anything of the sort. This lasted all through grade, middle, and even high school, me being mostly oblivious to anything that to most girls came so easily. Now don't get me wrong...I had a certain personal style for myself, but it had no connection with what the rest of the world followed. Not bad, not good, just...there. I was a dancer and runner so most times it was what was convenient and comfy. I had always liked to look at fashion and had an interest but just not the time for what seemed like a lot of work. Plus an extra nail in the fashion coffin for me was that I am LDS, and we believe that modesty is an essential standard and should be observed in all aspects of our lives....the latest trend rarely ever follows this rule!
All through high school I designed and my Mom had made my dance dresses, because back then designers weren't putting out modest lines, and so it was up to me and my Mom to make it work. We did pretty well I think and this was sort of the beginning of my awakening. I realized that fashion and virtue could coexist, it would just take some good 'ole ingenuity and a little finesse. Both which I thought I was capable of mustering.
Now, as a Wife and Mother I am learning to fine tune my skills to fit within my budget and schedule. I try to do things that are economical and current...70% of the time I think I even succeed at this goal, and bless my husbands heart he goes along with it.
So I hope this is a place where you can come to get good ideas and maybe even catch a spark of creativity for your own "goody-two-shoes" style.
